LEADERSHIP
The Advantages of Co-Curricular Activities for Students
April 9th, 2024

School plays such an integral role in more ways than one! In addition to academics, it’s essential to provide opportunities to grow beyond the classroom through co-curricular activities. According to the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS), girls who participate in co-curriculars demonstrate higher self-confidence, leadership and resilience, contributing significantly to their personal development.

At ECS, our co-curricular programme covers many areas of interest: Arts, Athletics, Community Service, Clubs and Committees. Our students gain a sense of belonging and confidence through the diverse opportunities we offer.

Student Life Philosophy

My role as Director of Student Experience allows me to collaborate with each student, helping them discover which activities align with their interests and passions. We want them to feel comfortable taking risks and stepping outside the box without focusing too much on the outcome. It’s all about the experience.

At ECS, students take ownership of their journey. This is why the student experience can change; it always reflects our current student body and leaders. This approach makes space for them to define what’s relevant and interesting to them.

Co-Curricular Activities Instil Agency

Our students initiate school-wide projects and learn to advocate for themselves and others. They’re asked for their input and collaboration to develop initiatives such as our division Prefects welcoming new students and checking in after 6 weeks to be sure they have transitioned well. Their actions also inspire their peers and ultimately create a lasting impact especially on younger students.

Academics & Co-Curriculars

Co-curriculars are meant to enrich each student’s experience; they are creative, and social outlets that connect like-minded individuals of all ages. From our Botany Club to our Health and Happiness Committee, students share their interests with one another to enrich their school experience. They do not have the same boundaries as they would in a classroom setting. These are the memories that stick with students for a lifetime. The seeds that we plant now often translate later in life.

Our goal is always to listen to the students' ideas, and give them the space to create and express themselves and help them manifest their ideas. Most importantly, we show up and show our support to new initiatives! Seeing them shine and connect with the ECS community makes working at a school so magical.
