Public Speaking Winners Woo Crowd

If the May 8th competition sponsored by the Old Girls' Association is anything to go by, the art of public speaking is alive and well at ECS!
"Speak the speech, I pray you, as I pronounc’d it to you, trippingly on the tongue."
                                                                                             -Hamlet's advice to The Players

Event Chairperson Émilie Huot eloquently introduced each of the speakers from Grades 6 to 11, who had impressed their peers and teachers enough in earlier presentations to have been chosen to represent their Grade at this final gathering. There were a wide variety of speeches in both French and English, on a wide variety of topics:

  • Grade 6:  Jacqueline Webb on William Shakespeare’s,"Better three hours too soon than a minute too late."
  • Grade 7: Carsyn Meloche on William Shakespeare’s, "The course of true love never did run smooth."
  • Grade 8:  Rana Gaffar on William Shakespeare’s, "To do a great thing do a little wrong."
  • Grade 9: Allie Bernstein on Stephen Leacock’s, "Advertising may be described as the science of arresting the human intelligence. . . ."
  • Grade 9: Athina Khalid on Henry David Thoreau’s, "Aim above morality.  Be not simply good, be good for something."
  • Grade 10:  Natalie Pang on Carlo Collodi’s, "Whether we have a lesson more or a lesson less, we shall always remain the same donkeys."
The audience members clearly enjoyed the privilege of listening to these top ECS, as reflected in their warm applause and cheers when prizes were presented by Old Girls’ Association President Lucy Riddell.

Congratulations to everyone involved!
