Passing of Mme Michèle Gorry, Headmistress 1991-96
Miss Edgar's and Miss Cramp's School is saddened to announce the death of Mme Michèle Gorry, the School's Headmistress from 1991 to 1996. Mme Gorry passed away on Thursday, December 10th as a result of a stroke.
Mme Gorry began her career at Miss Edgar's and Miss Cramp's as a Grade 7 homeroom teacher and a French teacher. Two years later she became Head of the French Department where she was responsible for enriching the French programme by introducing cultures religieuses, and three streams of French language instruction including langue maternelle. Mme Gorry went on to become Assistant to the Headmistress, then Vice-Principal, where she played a major role in maintaining and promoting the school's academic standards.
After becoming Head in 1991, Mme Gorry continued to take the School in new directions. ECS became a leader in the use of technology in education, expanded its academic and athletic programmes, laid the foundations for a new Middle School, and launched its new Kindergarten programme. In addition, ECS developed its first strategic plan, and was one of the first schools in Quebec to be accredited by the Canadian Educational Standards Institute (CESI).
This list of accomplishments does not begin to convey the full picture of what Mme Gorry gave to the School. She brought her warmth, compassion, humour and sense of proportion to every situation and conversation. She showed a deep appreciation of ECS traditions and culture and found contemporary and appropriate applications for them. After retiring, Mme Gorry continued to maintain strong connections to the ECS community, and attended many reunions and get-togethers, both formal and informal. She will be dearly missed by all.
Friends and family are warmly invited to celebrate Michele's life on December 22, 2015 at the Cote-des-Neiges Funeral Home, 4525 Chemin de la Cote- des- Neiges.
